This is the floating bathtub I spent 3.5 years on, home based in Little Creek, Va.

While I was on board, the DeSoto County cruised the Mediterranean in 1962, visiting Spain, Italy, Greece, and several of the islands.

The Caribbean was our second home, San Juan being our main liberty port, but we also visited St. Thomas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Haiti, and Panama.

We also played a part in the Cuban Missile Crisis, delivering Marines to Guantanamo Bay, and evacuating dependent wives and children.

On other cruises, we visited Nova Scotia, Scotland, and Ireland. I left the ship the day before she embarked on a cruise of the  Great Lakes in 1964.   I'm sorry now I missed it!  But...

Important quotes to remember, especially today!!!

"If history teaches us anything, it teaches that simpleminded appeasement
or wishful thinking about our adversaries is folly.  It means the betrayal
of our past, and the squandering of our freedom."

                     President Ronald Reagan
                                     March 3, 1983

"National defense is one of the cardinal duties of a statesman."

                                      President John Adams

"There is only one tactical principle which is not subject to change.
It is to use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wounds,
death and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time."

                                                       Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.
